:marseyelonmusk: Elon makes an elementary school physics statement. Redditors:marseywhirlyhat: cry and rewrite the rules of the universe to own him:soyjakanimeglasses:

https://old.reddit.com/r/EnoughMuskSpam/comments/106i1ni/elon_not_knowing_anything_about_aerospace?sort=controversial

Context: Ion/Hal thrusters accelerate a propellant (i.e. a fuel) using electricity . Calling this electric propulsion is not really an epic own (though most redditors prefer to just argue against high school physics instead)

A rocket can't be electric since for it to be a rocket it needs a rocket engine, but this just semantics and has nothing to do with Newton's 3rd law. Elecric propulsion is possible using an Ion Thruster.

I love when people who actually know shit call Musk out. As a professional software dev I always had this hunch that what he said in his interviews about cars, rockets, trains, etc. was BS but never was in the position to prove it.

Elon is right but it doesn't count becaaauuuuse :marseyunresponsive: his semantics and this hunch i have

Starlink satellites use hall effect thrusters. Musk not only sucks at engineering but he doesn't even know his own product line.

Redditor completely BTFOs musk by pointing out that his companies already use these technologies :soyjakanimeglasses:

But we could use a balloon to reach the sky, and then some sort of electric propeller.

What if we launch a giant air balloon into orbit :marseywhirlyhat:

Hi, actual physicist here. He doesn’t know what the frick he’s talking about. Also my father was a physicist and it so happens he worked on researching electric rockets for NASA in the 1960s.

/r/witchesvspatriarchy user chimes in (real physicist btw)

Because apparently you can't use electricity to create propulsion directly. Oh, wait [ion propulsion wiki link].

I hate this weird cope that a billionaire is actually an idiot.

Unless some neighbor straight up inherited a billion, he has to be at least above average to get to the big b club.

These people couldn't turn 10 dollars into 20, let alone an inheritance of a hundred million into billions.

It's like the "Trump is only wealthy because his dad gave him a loan when he was 20" cope

Even though the biggest meme about rich kids is how they are all useless and squander their money within a generation, unless it somehow stays in a trust or as stock in a company they didnt directly create.

These people have zero concept of hard work, ability, and putting yourself in positions of opportunity

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Nah Trump 100% just inherited a vast intergenerational wealth(he got way more than the small loan) and then put that massive seed money into a real estate economy that his family was already established in which is literally just printing free money. Whether or not he worked hard doesn't have any real bearing on how rich he is.

Elon on the other hand did legitimately build himself up with nothing. If you look hard into his past you'll find that his dad Erroll was an early investor in paypal for $20,000 but thats the extent of what Elon recieved from intergenerational wealth.

Trump made a lot of money before he cashed out on his dads buildings. He was always going to be a rocket from his personality alone

Jump in the discussion.

What was he doing that made him that money before he cashed out?

He invested in a series of shitty buildings that turned into cash cows when Manhathan blew up from a shithole into a nice place in the late 1980s->early 90s. It was a gold rush. Then he invested in Atlantic City casinos then his dad died and he was able to use his $$ to rescue from the bankrupcy hole he never fully recovered from when a deal when sour.

Then he turned into a media-driven brand that he licensed all over the world

Jump in the discussion.

Yes that is literally what I just described in my initial post. Im sorry but using your family's vast wealth and pre-existing real estate company infrastructure to buy some properties isn't what being a hard working self made man is.

That's a big difference from a rich kid living off the success of his upper-middle class father, which is what we're talking about.

If you think that's all he is you know nothing about business.

A rocket can't be electric since for it to be a rocket it needs a rocket engine, but this just semantics and has nothing to do with Newton's 3rd law. Elecric propulsion is possible using an Ion Thruster.

>An ion thruster ionizes a neutral gas by extracting some electrons out of atoms, creating a cloud of positive ions.

It requires a gas

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Even then, an ion thruster has very slow acceleration ramp. That kind of thrust is good for long distance journeys when you’re already in space for higher masses, and much more practical to be used on a lower mass probe.

EM radiation could be used to propel a rocket if you really felt like doing that.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

All definitions I found speficially mention combustion or at least jet propulsion.

It's definitely feasible in space, is it theoretically possible on earth without destroying the planet?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No idea, not my problem tbh. :marseynails:

Ok, but actually if we do some back of the napkin calculations:

:marseyreading:

Assuming all the EM radiation is pointed in the right direction,

E=c*p for light. Rearranging:

We get 3.352×10^12 J per kilogram of payload (https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=%28%281+kgescape+velocity%29speed+of+light%29)

or 1.4×10^-5 times the energy released by the Tsar Bomba (https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=%28%281+kgescape+velocity%29speed+of+light%29%2Fenergy+released+by+tsar+bomba)

So we can launch approximately 71 tons for 1 Tsar Bomba explosion worth of energy which we know does not destroy the earth.

For reference the ISS is 445 tons but it was launched in many separate pieces, so it's easily able to launch comparable loads to the heavier things we launch.

Is a spacecraft able to withstand such radiation though? No idea.

I spent 2 minutes thinking about it though so I could easily be making some rslurred mistake.

@FeynmanDidNothingWrong @TwoLargeSnakesMating discuss.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah, in broad strokes it's just E = pc / radiation pressure.

The main engineering challenge here is you can only launch very highly reflective things this way: abnormally/impossibly reflective things. Putting terajoules into a kilogram of anything is going to turn it into a plasma, so the radiation needs to get reflected rather than absorbed. This is symmetrically true regardless of if the craft is emitting its own radiation or being propelled by an external beam.

Also, the pesky atmosphere in the way is going to severely reduce efficiency for the first few kilometers of the launch, because you're also turning the air into a plasma. But ignoring all of that… it at least wouldn't destroy the Earth, probably just whatever you're launching.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

what about electricity generation? Is there any hope of reactors that could create the needed power without weighing more than the payload? Or would we need to shoot the rocket with lasers from earth?
