GUY BASED MY WORTH OFF AN iPhone

Met this guy at uni he wasn't the best looking but he was nice we get to talking and he jokes about how I have An Android (he. Has an iPhone btw) so I jokingly reply with a sassy remark and say "well if my android is a problem maybe you should buy me an iPhone." He smriks and say"I have to see if you're iPhone Material ." I get offended slightly and he says it was. Joke

Joke or not I didn't find it funny and I said I am no longer interested lol I need opinions and I crazy?

You can run play store apps on all of em and apks.

The problem is "google play services", which is a background app that basically uploads all of your shit (including your location all the time) to google. You can run most apps without it, but some will have minor errors or complain, typically if they have in-app purchases.

There are a couple of workarounds that don't involve installing google play services:

  • CalyxOS has a thing called microG which does some of the less invasive parts of google play services. Also it has a firewall that lets you choose what apps can phone home.

  • GrapheneOS has a thing called "sandboxed google play services" which is a bit better than microG and pretty much works with everything. I've never had a problem with this one.

  • Just avoid using shithole apps that use google goy services. There is a lot of non-shit apps on "f-droid" (https://f-droid.org) that are open source and won't upload your data to some chinese ad farm and don't require google play services, its like the open source app store.

There is also an open-source client for google play called "aurora store" (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aurora.store) but it doesn't really solve the google play services problem.

If you're interested, I usually just recommend just getting a google pixel and then install grapheneOS (https://grapheneos.org) cause it has an easy installer and solves the google play services problem really well, see below vid:
