This site has done nothing but bring me down as a person. everyday i come in here and all you do is tear me down insult me hurt me with your words and do nothing but harm me emotionally physically mentally and I just can’t take it any longer this site is so abusive and toxic it’s crazy. no one even realizes how disgusting all of your behaviors are. every single time I talk or type or even do anything or interact with anyone on the site everybody just goes against me and gangs up on me like a pack of wolves and just attacks me and i didn’t do anything to deserve these attacks and these hurtful words. i literally just try to be nice to everybody but nobody ever wants to be in my shoes and nobody ever tries to sympathize with me and see where I’m coming from all of you just see me as the enemy and as the bad guy that’s trying to ruin the site or something when really I’m just trying to spread positivity. you guys act like I’m some kind of virus or disease, constantly casting me out so much, making me feel so left out and so alone in this site. it’s fricking driving me insane I feel mental and I feel like a weirdo just being around all of you because of how you treat me. at this point in time, I’ve given up on ever trying again and ever becoming any of your friends because I just know your feelings towards me clearly. i know all of you hate me and never want to be around me again or never have anything to do with me. it’s clear that you all think I’m a joke and that I’m stupid, idiotic and boring. it’s so mean because I literally don’t do anything to you guys but you guys always act like you hate me and it makes me feel so confused because I don’t know what I did to deserve it. I feel like I should just leave because clearly nobody wants to be around me and everyone would be happier if i left anyways so i’ll just go and i hope all of you find happiness in life and i’m sorry for all the troubles i’ve ever put any of you through. i give up. goodbye.

Smile From The Streets You Hold by John Frusciante. I don't think there's any other album I've ever heard that sounds like this, or is a better representation of someone who has hit absolute rock bottom. About half of it is recorded before and during his first stint with RHCP, including 2 songs he recorded with River Phoenix (who he may or may not have inadvertently caused the death of :marseytinfoil: ). The other half of the album was recorded during the worst of his heroin addiction, where he nearly died multiple times and subsequently burnt his entire house down, losing basically everything including his paintings, guitars, and cassette recordings.

Johnny Depp and the Butthole Surfers guy did a "documentary" detailing his lifestyle during this time period but things got much worse in the years after. This interview from 1996 is like watching a human skeleton ramble about death. There was also a "music video" released which is just a minute and a half of him shooting up.

He only released the album for drug money and apparently there's thousands of copies sitting a warehouse somewhere as it's never been reissued. It's also kind of crazy how he lost all of his teeth and nearly died of sepsis then under a year later rejoined RHCP and released Californication.

Big Pun - Capital Punishment

The only album Big Pun released while he was alive. Track after track of Pun showing why he was the best rapper on the mic. Unironically Bob Dylan and Big Pun are the greatest lyricists to me. This album should've won the Grammy for best Rap Album, but somehow lost to Jay-Z. This album would be a 10/10 for me if it wasn't for the god-awful skits they did between tracks. For what it's worth; most album skits are pretty bad, but Pun's were absolute dogshit.

Coldplay - X&Y

Say what you want about Coldplay, but these songs just take me somewhere else. It's the perfect album for when you're alone in a car and driving at night. Some songs are calming, while some give you an eerie feeling that's just intoxicating while being alone. I don't think there's a single bad track on this album.

Pogo - Cultures

If you've never heard of Pogo, to summarize, he's a guy who takes soundbites from movies, and then makes music to fit around those soundbites. It's a genre called Plunderphonics if we're being specific. Cultures is only a 9 track album, and I think I play about 7 of them on repeat constantly. Just absolutely lush with pleasing sounds, really easy to do work with it playing in the background.

You like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

The National- Sleep Well Beast; I'm a huge fan of many of their styles, but Sleep Well Beast is probably their comfiest, most nostalgic sounding.

or Lupe Fiasco- The Cool; one of the albums that got me into Hip Hop. Great mix of poppy beats and complex lyricism (e.g. Gotta Eat being a string of fast food references to tell a story)

Yeah, they can be surprisingly esoteric. I mean, they're not Xiu Xiu or Hans KrΓΌsi, but you've gotta be in a certain headspace to get it.

I'll start this off with, Brothers by The Black Keys. It isn't the best album as 1/4 of it is kind of bad, but I just used to hear it a lot so it has grown on me. I also just like The Black Keys style with their blues influences.

No, I just give some generic, accessible nonsense depending on context because if someone is making banal small talk that graspingly they’re likely either an awkward retail or hospitality worker attempting to flirt or they’re HR or low level management at work and an answer like β€œAt Folsom Prison” or β€œBorn to Run” will satisfy the question without making them feel as tedious as they are and scoring brownie points because it relates to them. Outside of that, like in this context, I can be more nuanced. And I can’t very well compare post-rock soundscapes to neofolk to ska to DSBM to shoegaze to crust to bubblegum pop you FRICKING R-SLUR.

I go back and forth between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets but I'm pretty sure Ride wins out. It's solid start to finish, there isn't a stinker in the track list, and Fade to Black is imo the greatest metal song of all time. It's insane to me that it was put together by some dudes in their teens/early 20s.
