fricking get over it. you didn't gain entrance into an ivy. life won't end. the rat race to get into university is a fricking scam. there is life beyond university.

university is at least an option for a lot of east asians. so this is really about white adjacency and class climbing and not about helping non-east-asians get into university.

do the east asians, especially the chinese, really think this decision is going to help southeast asians get into universities? pacific islanders? do they even think about places other than east asia?

Despite public perceptions that AsianAms oppose affirmative action, @AAPIData found 70% of AsianAms FAVOR affirmative action.

But 1 group stands apart in opposition: Chinese Americans. Here are some thoughts as a Chinese American in academia (thread):

At its core, affirmative action creates opportunities for communities of color (inc. AsianAms) and destabilizes white dominance in higher education. Until affirmative action, AsianAms did not have access to higher ed til the 1960s or any visible presence til the 1980s.

However, I see that many Chinese Americans have willingly aligned w/ white conservatives on affirmative action. We have paradoxically committed to dismantle the very race-based policies that opened up access to us in the first place.

Organized Chinese American groups against affirmative action rely heavily on the model minority myth & anti-Blackness, blaming “undeserving” Black/Brown students for taking spots yet never indicting the disproportionate admission of under-achieving white legacy students.

They perpetuate colorblind racial logics, blaming the act of recognizing racial categories in admissions as racist, while paradoxically highlighting their racial minority status and claiming culturally superior attributes that reify the model minority myth (Oiyan Poon 2018)

Of course, none of this would be possible w/o white conservatives like Edward Blum strategically recruiting Chinese Americans as pawns to dismantle affirmative action.

Yet, the debate over representation in higher ed exposes cracks & fallacies in our racial consciousness.

Personally, I reject validation by Predominately White Institutions as the precious thing to protect. Instead, coalitions w/ POC to activate collective power, destabilize whiteness, and assert our racial subjectivity on our own terms. Go after whiteness, not each other.
