As someone who grew up on a dairy farm, you'd be surprised to hear how ignorant urban children are about agriculture, let alone farm animals. I think a national mandatory agriculture course and actual hands on experience for all children and adults would be educational, it might also cure people from veganism.

This. The serious answer is that moral reasoning only makes sense between parties that both stand to benefit from having some shared moral sensibilities. Most animals are incapable of this, thus trying to extend moral arguments to them is a sort of category error.

Alternatively, being cruel to animals in certain ways is a credible signal that one is likely to treat other humans poorly, and this tends to get moralized when it shouldn't be.
