Invasion of the Bodysnatchers: Full Movie- the original anti-communist one
None

John Cleese, a once-beloved member of the iconic comedy sextet “Monty Python,” has been showing signs of Roganism for some time now. Today, the transformation is complete, as right-wing outlet GB News announces Cleese’s grand return to television by way of a new talk show with conservative “free speech advocate” Andrew Doyle. Its theme? “Cancel culture.”

Now if you know anything at all, you probably can tell that the phrases “cancel culture” and “wokeism” are dog whistles for right-wing pundits eager to point out how a changing culture is becoming toxic for people who used to make a living telling “my wife” jokes. Which Cleese is no stranger to: awhile back, Cleese framed his entire standup act around his expensive divorce from his third wife. And something tells us the jokes won’t be any fresher on the comic’s upcoming GB News show, in which he’ll act as commentator and presenter.

Obviously, it doesn’t bode well for fans of Cleese’s earlier work.

Including fellow Python Eric Idle, who has managed to remain a lovely person.

And even including…a past version of Cleese himself.

In terms of what we can expect from Cleese’s new show, well, this tweet sums it up perfectly:

Lena Dunham is releasing a new movie: Catherine Called Birdy (2022)

It's a period piece of a brave teenage girl who is supposed to be married off like a proper medival ugly chick, but she stands up to the patriarchy with some witty monologues about being more than a frick stick.

A 14 year old girl in medieval England navigates through life and avoiding potential suitors her father has in mind.

The new Hellraiser kind of slaps

Just finished watching it. Not a perfect movie by any means, but is easily in the top three. I’d probably put the 1987 first, followed by Hellbound, then this one a very close third. All the rest are waaaaay far below.

"Bros" Review Thread

Disclaimer I was about 10 natties and an old fashion deep going into this so will be a bit more forgiving

Tldr: if you saw the trailer you saw enough of the movie unless you're really interested. not great, not as bad as I thought. 4/10

First off I will say this was a big budget movie. Feels like it with great directing, editing, sets, actors, etc. There was also clearly some writers in there with talent and I lol'd a couple times and was laughing about 50% of the time. The story is a kinda role reversal rom com where it follows the flighty b-word and her quest to change the hunk and be with him. So sound alright right?

Well, the star and person I assume was involved with a lot of the writing Billy Eichner is terrible. I mean he has a couple funny moments, but only a few in a 2 hour movie where he is there the whole time. There is not a single scene where he does not bring up being gay, either to assert dominance over lesser straggots or apologize to the higher ups on the totem (LGBTQ PLUS, yes they spell the whole thing out EVERY TIME) pole. But mostly to lob random "lol gay guys are so x" jokes that get weird after the first 5 times. Then there's the fact that they intentionally talk about gay butt s*x around a straight couple's like 8 year old kids and the wife is like YASSS QUEEEEN. Then he gets mad that the dumb hunks mom doesn't talk about docking with 2nd graders and later the hunk is link "grug sorry I made you shutup about gay s*x :(" and of course the mom comes around and gets a "you might be gay!" scene please clap

This was a chance to show the world that a gay couple could be normal (that's literally the start of the movie is an exec wanting him to write a gay movie for straights) but the character we're supposed to relate to (I think?) is neurotic, makes taking it in the butt his entire personality, and tries to groom kids. His love interest is a normal swole country boy who is shown the way of being an obnoxious cute twink and overcomes this. Empowering. Not to mention the casual steroid usage

Somehow the trains came off as the most reasonable in this movie and that should tell you what you need to know

Watching the new Jeff Dalmer show, anyone else annoyed by this Netflix shit true crime crap?

Don’t get me wrong, so far it looks like a show that is entertaining and fun to watch but to me it seems like more Netflix money grubbing for nothing to make a show about this. I mean imagine your son gets killed by this guy and you have to deal with people reminding you of it and talking about it all the time. Seems mighty disrespectful to make blatant entertainment out of peoples suffering like this with no buffer. What can be said about this guy that hasn’t been said already honestly. It’s appealing to the same morbid curiosity natures as you can find on watchpeopledie, but softened for a wide audience.

In a few months we will be getting Netflix snuff films and pornos

"Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros," Eichner wrote on Twitter Sunday. "And that’s disappointing."

Don't miss our feature:How Billy Eichner's trailblazing 'Bros' puts a brilliant spin on the LGBTQ+ rom-com

We'll never know exactly why "Bros" faltered – although it may be tempting to chalk it up to Eichner's sentiment. Homophobia is indeed alive and well across the country.

Despite progress in entertainment and political representation, anti-LGBTQ sentiment and legislation remain a threat to the community. Transgender people in particular have become a political punching bag, even though they represent less than 2% of the population. Eighteen states block transgender athletes from playing in sports according to their gender identity.

We know art can inform life, and vice versa, making increased diversity in entertainment crucial to tell all kinds of stories.

Given this, Hollywood should keep taking risks on LGBTQ films like "Bros." Without mainstream film representation, LGBTQ people will only feel that much more stuck on the sidelines of society.

I walked into a "Bros" screening with admittedly high expectations. The trailer featured hot men who would inevitably end up together after a series of traditional rom-com trials and tribulations with the added twist of homosexual high jinks – a meet-cute at a gay bar! Gay s*x! Inter-LGBTQ community arguments!

Overall, the film met said expectations. Bobby Leiber (Eichner) and Aaron Shepard (Luke Macfarlane) fell in love, broke up and got back together in less than two hours – I've fallen in and out of love with a man in less time, honestly – pushing each other to look inward to accept themselves in order to love and accept the other fully. And this all happened against "a backdrop of NSFW selfies, casual group s*x and indiscriminate steroid injections," as my colleague Edward Segarra points out.

I laughed a lot; I teared up; I questioned my own insecurities about body image and masculinity; I thought about what it means to be queer. Imagine if I saw this at age 18 instead of 30. Might I have worked through some feelings sooner? Talked to a therapist? Come out earlier?

These thoughts race a marathon around my head every time I watch a film featuring LGBTQ people, or at least LGBTQ themes. If I'm feeling this way at my age, what might this mean for someone younger or older than me? A young person might eke out the courage to come out to his parents or his best friend. Or maybe ask out the guy he's been making eyes at across the cafeteria. An older person might reflect on a lost love, and marvel at how fast the world moved toward an increased level of acceptance.

The "Bros" discourse remains out of control (at least according to my cursed Twitter feed). Maybe it bombed because not enough people like Eichner. Maybe he's not a big enough name. Maybe the film's marketing required a makeover. Also, romantic comedies don't bring people to the box office like they used to. Was it too mainstream? Too gay? (I have to log off more often; yikes.)

But we must remember that no movie can represent everyone. Just because this one gay movie didn't please all nor perform well at the box office doesn't mean another couldn't, nor should it have to. Films like Hulu's "Fire Island" and Paramount+'s "Three Months" were nestled in more protected homes on streaming but contribute just as much to queer film canon.

The more you make, the more opportunities to find a sweet spot. But more importantly – stay with me, Hollywood – the more you make, the more opportunities there are for people to see parts of themselves onscreen they may not even know exist.

People need to watch themselves have a main-character moment instead of settling for another interpretation of the sassy sidekick. That way, we can make room for LGBTQ people of color, particularly trans women of color, to land leading roles, too.

I will encourage everyone I know to go see "Bros" when they can. But I don't fault anyone for waiting for it to stream. Movies are expensive! We are still in a pandemic! I get it. But seeing this movie means you are seeing me. My friends. My life.

We finally got it. Let's get more.

Meghan Markle Calls Out ‘Austin Powers,’ ‘Kill Bill,’ ‘Full Metal Jacket’ For “Toxic Stereotyping” Of Asian Women

In her return to her Spotify podcast, Archetypes, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Meghan Markle takes on one of the most prominent stereotypes of Asian women on screen: The Dragon Lady.

Markle maintainted that, “This toxic stereotyping of women of Asian descent…this doesn’t just end once the credits roll.”

As a case in point, she introduces sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen who wrote about the Dragon Lady stereotype in her book Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism.

Yuen told the story of being catcalled by a man using a line out of Full Metal Jacket while she was traveling to an academic conference.

Yuen explained, “I knew why because I looked around and I thought and I saw that I was the only Asian woman in that area.

She goes on to detail the line’s enduring popularity, being referenced in a hit song by 2 Live Crew as well as in “shows like South Park and films like The 40 Year Old Virgin.”

Is it just me or does this genuinely look like shit?

Like the CGI is good but the story and the tone of the movie itself feels like shit based on this trailer. I wouldn't want to watch this movie at all. Anybody else?

I remember watching this back when futurology/singularity were still fun ideas. Watching it this time around was a lot funnier. Future woman's autism would've permanently blackpilled the poor girl if she were just a bit older.
