Probably saved millions of Korean allies who were short on food because of the Japanese attacking their supply lines and tens of thousands of allied soldiers from deaths in the ongoing invasion. The second nuke was because they didn't take a hint after the first one, Emperor Hirohito wanted to surrender upon realizing the situation, but his military advisors refused. He had to have their notice of surrender sent out of the palace in secret. The nukes also killed far fewer people than the total firebombing deaths
