FMAB getting knocked off of the #1 spot on MAL was my
moment. I don't think it was the greatest piece of art ever made, but it was a good benchmark of what a great anime was and was something we could all agree was a good representation of what anime was. What replaced it? A fricking hentai. I hate anime so much it's unreal.

Funny, I usually hear the opposite. I'm aware the original did its own thing and brotherhood followed the manga but I don't know the details. Kinda leaning towards watching both starting with the original ngl. Actually never heard of the movie until now. I take it it's a continuation/finale of the original anime?

Yeah the movie just wraps up the original anime very nicely. I can't tell you why I don't like brotherhood because of spoilers but to say the quality in story was lacking would be an understatement. So much contrivance for effectively no pay off

There’s a lot of hate post L. I thought it was pretty good outside of Mello. The last episode was my favorite the writers did a good job portraying Near as the final protagonist

The episodes immediately post-L were weak. But the last handful of episodes and the episode where Light's dad died matched the quality of the first half of the show.
Near was a weak character. Much harder to root for than L.

Outside of the final 2 episodes he was a weak character but him and his team made them good.

I liked the penultimate episode more. But the finale was solid, even if Near's win felt cheap. Matsuda shooting light was the highlight for me. Also got to see Light truly cornered and beaten which was really interesting.
