Why are some self inserts so cringe? :marseycringe2:

I watched the first two episodes of I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too which of course telegraphed the cringiness from the name itself but I wanted to check once. Other than some hilariously bad production value(they seriously used a cutout of 3 characters for a whole scene where their faces didn't match the situation at all but still they had to include those3 supporting characters in that scene IDK why it just looked terrible) the lack of self awareness is so bad. So a fattie intervenes to save a beautiful girl who's being harassed in public in Japan, gets beaten up then finds a hidden away door that can be used to travel to a parallel word and has a spiderman style genetic change that turns him into a /fit/ handsome man with six packs. He sees these six packs and doesn't try to check what he looks like once till he goes to school where his old bullies are obviously :marseypikachu2: at his appearance and all the grills are miring. At this point the hot girl he saved comes and offers him a position at the super elite school her father runs and even here he's so handsome that all the students keep staring at him during lunchtime. So then later when he asks the heroine how she recognized him despite him losing like half his BMI since he had saved her she said it was because he had the same 'kind eyes'. I was watching to see how trashy it could get but

Mass popularity of modern media means that it will appeal to the lowest common demographic - in this case r-slurs with fried dopamine receptors from internet who are too impatient to settle for anything other than instant gratification.

Older stuff atleast had to build up the protagonist to start doing cool stuff to make it seem like he was deserving of it- with hardship unlocking latent superpowers and training arcs and whatnot.

But everyone nowadays just wants a harem of hot anime waifus instantly pining after their peepee

noooooooo the character has to do poorly then struggle then do well! All art has to imitate the process of people striving to better themselves!

Why?

It just makes for a better story fam.

Training arcs may be boring but protagonist struggling before overcoming great odds is narratively much more satisfying than being handed a powerup that allows him to destroy the universe/antagonists with a shart.

I disagree. Especially for a revenge plot style book The powers to avenge themselves can be handed to them basically off camera with no effort and it won't hurt the enjoyability of the plot.

My go to for early power fantasies is the count of monte cristo where all of his talents are basically inborn or just given to him by his rich smart benefactor in prison. His only weakness was trusting people at the beginning. This in no way lessons the plot because it isn't about him struggling to better himself. It is about his actions of revenge and how they play out against his enemies.

(Props to him for not going back for the thot with kids and instead marrying the barely legal princess)

There are too many "cheat" in another world stories and they're all so incredibly lame. There are very few that actually are worth it and those that do ground the mc relative to the rest of the world despite the one cheat they have.

I wonder if there exists a reverse dynamic where a chad hunk is isekai'd as a short ugly and goofy creature

Like an Arnold Schwarznegger to Danny De Vito transition

This is actually a really interesting phenomenon that used to be pretty much a Korean/Chinese media staple, and you'd only see it there. I don't know what kind of social issues have to arise for men needing this level of wish fulfillment, but it's VERY strange.
