It's a movie that takes place after the main series. They have to compete against a university tankery team despite being a high school team and 1/6th the size and budget, but all the teams they fought against (and befriended) in the tournament in the main series come together and temporarily transfer to their school to get around the rules and help them out so they can fight on an even playing field. Amazing movie, an hour and a half of the two hour runtime is tank battles.

Oh, also it's a world where tank battles are considered a feminine martial art/sport and future hand-wavey technology makes them safe. Anime really takes the cake for the most neurodivergent, over-the-top convoluted stories. So it's a bunch of anime girls playing war games in tanks (somehow considered feminine) with special anti-death tech on gigantic aircraft carriers/floating cities? But despite all this super modern technology they're old butt tanks?

Yes. Though the competition matches are on land, just the schools and practice are on the ships. It's considered a feminine martial art kind of like how the naginata is.

In structure it's essentially a sports show, complete with a underdog protagonist team, an MC who left the sport for various reasons who is dragged back in to lead them and who along the way rediscovers their love of the sport, and a silly premise of "we have to win the championship or X bad thing will happen!" Practically identical to Big Green, Little Giants, etc except the sport is WW2 style tank battles.
