I just wanna talk about this series. Has anybody ever seen it? I don't think it's on modern paid streaming platforms.

I was watching it as it released in the late 2000's/early 2010's.

Plot summary: A comically depressed and suicidal man named Nozomu Itoshiki begins teaching a high school class. His students, mostly the girls, are all based on the extreme of some sort of mental disorder/personality quirk/trope.

There's Kafuka, the frighteningly optimisitc one and his foil; Chiri, the most extreme case of OCD ever documented, a hikikomori girl, a yandere, a dirty foreign refugee, a hot blonde with a split personality, the one who can only text, and of course, the one who's so normal she's boring.

The episodes are just multiple slice of life stories where the author plays out scenarios about Japanese culture that are weird, thought-provoking, or ironic, and plays it off all the character quirks of the students and Sensei.

It has a very unique style, great cast, and all the music FRICKIN SLAPS.

here's more:

Aside from the aesthetics i don't understand what a westerner would get from it. The jokes and references are pretty esoteric even by otaku standards.

Some are harder to get than others, but that doesn't mean any of them are beyond western understanding.

Look at the clip i just slotted in the bottom of the post. Though maybe Ameriburgers don't get it because they don't feign politeness like leafs, bongs, nips, etc. do

This was probably the first series, along with Haruhi, that made me really want to go for an extended stay in Japan.

Also, the neurotic quirks of the girls are pretty universal and even more hilarious now that we've come to the point where foids will list said disorders upfront in their bios.

A lot of basic plot lines of episodes are parodies of Japanese literature from the showa era like akutogawa or souseki.

Also some western lit that was popular at the time like Agatha Christie

I vaguely remember a part in the manga where Kometa goes mask off full chud mode about teachers unions in japan being blatant communist cadres (actually true)

There's a lot of jokes making fun of 2ch netuyou (Japanese internet chuds) too though. I think a westerner would probably miss all the political context.

I like when he's mad about May Day.

"I thought you were a lefty."

"No, I'm a school teacher."
