MegaTokyo, 17 years later

@Tomboy_Supremacist dredged up some core memories and I suddenly remember reading a lot of MegaTokyo when I was a young weeb.

For anyone unfamiliar it was a webcomic started in 2000, and like most webcomics of the time it was for nerds and about g*mers. This is the first panel:

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16990426791953466.webp

They got off the ground when penny arcade threw them a link, and soon amassed an army of young weebs. Most of us thought Fred aka Pyro was in or freshly out of college, but it turns out he was 35 god darn years old when he drew that first comic.

The story was endearing at first, but after a few years the writer left and gave Fred full creative control. The themes veered away from gaming and went full tilt into proto moe.

Fred, who would have certainly :marseytrain2:ed out, was a mega weeb. He learned japanese to play dating sims before these were ported regularly. His influences were girly anime by CLAMP, specifically Chobits.

Nothing happened in the story since 2006. The plot synopsis is here:https://megatokyo.com/story and it's incredible light on any kind of story.

He makes $2500/month on patreon and has been delivering an average of 5 comics a year, backgrounds not included:

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16990426793531795.webp

The story was supposed to be about 2 guys stuck in Japan, which turned into a wish fulfillment underage dating comic for Fred. In about 17 years maybe a month of in-comic time appears to have passed, and his art seems to have regressed after peaking in 2005 or so.

What 20 years if experience looks like: https://i.rdrama.net/images/16990426796005304.webp

I was hoping there would be forums and subsequent drama but the forums are hella dead. Anyone else read this trash??

!anime !ranchers MEGATOKYO (THE ULTIMATE EARLY 2000S WEB 1.0 CRINGE WALMART AMERIMUTT PSEUDO-ANIMU FANTASY) HAS BEEN MENTIONED :marseyletsfuckinggo2:

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16990481743962948.webp

You forgot to mention some stuff about this rabbit hole of web 1.0 weebshittery:

  • 1. Fred Gallagher got $299,184 USD(!!!!) on Kickstarter with 4,958 backers for a MehgayTokyo VN that never came out, the last update on its Kickstarter page was in 2017, til this day its comment section is full of seething weebmutts sperging out about never receiving their kawaii VN :mutttantrum::marseydarkxd:

  • 2. The Encyclopedia Dramatica page for MAGATokyo has details about how Fred chimped out at weeacoomers who drew hentai fanart of his characters, even threatening to stop the comic if he ever found out hentai art of it, however, Fred himself had a personal website dedicated to questionable porn of KekaTokyo characters! in fact, his porn drawings date to as early as 1999!, so technically speaking, his porn art pre-dates MegaTokyo itself, MegaTokyo is a comic adaptation of the hentai characters that he created as fap material, and not the other way around! :marseypikachu2:

  • 3. Rodney Caston, the co-creator of MoogaTokyo who left the project due to Fred acting an r-slur, became a Techno-Libertarian politician grifter who tried to run as a Texas constable of the Libertarian Party twice, in 2008 :obama: and 2012 :smugobama: but failed :gigaobama:

Also I am indeed surprised how someone like Fred has somehow managed to avoid :marseytrain2:ing out, the dude is the prime candidate of a :marseytrain2:ing out case (kawaii manga lover, internet/vidya nerd, mid-life crisis, full of internet spergery, etc.), probably because he has been married for years, but still, plenty of mid-life crisis middle-aged coomers with kids also end up :marseytrain2:ing out (i.e. :bardfinn:)

lmfao i forgot about the VN holy shit $300k for NOTHING LMAO

https://megatokyo.com/faq

>After a very successful Kickstarter in 2013, Fred and team started development on a MegaTokyo Visual Novel game. It did not go well. Inexperience with game development; Fred learning to delegate and work with a team; major feature creep; a big underestimation of the quantity of artwork required; the realization that only Fred could draw stuff that looked "MegaTokyo"; and lots more. By the time some of these issues had improved, the MegaTokyo comic had been neglected for too long and Fred couldn't afford to work on the game full-time anymore. Fred and team continued working on it part-time until 2017, when the lead programmer left the project and things more or less ground to a halt. Fred has not given up and still hopes to salvage something from this, but what that will look like and when are still unknown.

I have never seen it actually cited to stan lee and steve ditko in his own writing 100% refutes it for reasons i would go into. There is also the topic of steve ditkos bdsm fetish comics.

In general steve ditko has been unfairly maligned as a werido when really he just didnt like the spotlight. He lived a normal life and saw his fam alot he just refused to talk to journos and fans. Watch this interview with his nephew.

I've been meaning to do an effortpost on Robert Stanek. He was a 2000s-early 2010s literary lolcow who self-published a terrible fantasy series that no one actually read, and then attempted to present himself as a world-famous bestselling novelist using an army of sockpuppets, fake fansites, thousands of fake Amazon reviews, photoshopping himself into pictures with other authors, and an entire fake forum where he circlejerked with himself about his own books. He constantly Googled himself, got into fights, and claimed that all of the negative info about him was a vast conspiracy created by jealous George R. R. Martin fans.

He's still around but he gave up on the fake forum, Amazon deleted all his fake reviews, and he switched to churning out hundreds of interchangeable children's picture books. Most people don't really pay attention anymore. He created a blog to represent a bunch of (conspicuously picture-less) indie authors that were part of his "publishing house." At one point he wrote his own obituary from one of their perspectives, before resurfacing days later and acting like nothing happened. One of his online personas also pretended to be Isaac Asimov's granddaughter.

Most of the info about him is on old forums and defunct sites. He was best known to the online GRRM fanbase and to people who were into the "sporking" subculture (livejournal litcrit for insecure teenage neurodivergents (and how I got interested in writing)).

I love litcows beyond words. Did you ever follow Maradonia? Especially the parts where her father bankrolled a book launch trailer, a movie and fake ISBN numbers and she would go around putting the book on displays at bookstores and libraries, pretending it was popular?

SA had a couple pet litcows. One who's name escapes me wrote a book titled Wild Animus and it was something about animal shapeshifter romance or smth. He self pubbed and printed THOUSANDS of copies which he could not sell anywhere. So he drove around various colleges and left boxes of the books around campus with FREE signs, hoping to cultivate an audience and propel himself into fame.

The second, and one nearer my heart, was a man from Quebec by the name of Jean François Bibeau. JF Bibeau had a profound midlife crisis and at the tender age of 36 left his wife and child to become a young crossdressing twink, anime fan, author, playwrite and cosplayer. He would try and lure preteen girls with his book, Felsic Current which was advertised as being an all male harem anime inspired novel aimed at fujos.

It centered around magical dancing and was written in impenetrable jargon. He would sell the book at cons dressed as the protagonist, Thendy Bravura, and would include a massive printer paper retcon jammed in between some of the chapters. He would routinely crossplay as male lolis, stopped wearing glasses (without getting contacts), lost all his friends trying to put together a play about his own psyche and subsisted on medium rare chicken breast, which made him fart relentlessly.

I love Maradonia. Recently tracked down the unlisted YouTube upload again, and watched the movie with a couple buddies and some alcohol. It had everybody rolling. I really wish they'd adapted the whole original book, because the thing has no ending whatsoever (other than a bald guy deepthroating a live snake).

I've never heard of the other two but they sound like a lot of fun. I'll have to check them out.

I don't think this author ever achieved true 'cow status, but the absolute worst thing I ever saw sporked was "Dragons: Lexicon Triumvirate," a very smart science fantasy novel about anthro dragons written by an Asian supremacist psued.

they were at Sakuracon (GIRUGAMESH!!) https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/04/23/a-matter-of-life-and-death

The Sakuracon provides an ego regulation service that has become increasingly necessary as the site has grown. I will admit to you that I sometimes feel like a bad-butt, which is patently insane. What do I do, really. I ramble to people I don't know with a familiarity I haven't earned. I need events like this one, ones where we are absolutely incidental to the culture, to take me down a couple pegs. Yesterday I sat in the foyer, hunched forward, musing about how presumptive it is for me to bring merchandise to something like this. When my blood began to feel viscous I knew that the Sakuracon was engaged in its holy work.

These events are about Fred Gallagher, also known as Piro. He writes and draws Megatokyo, which is a phenomenal success and tuned with precision to the cravings of the Japanese culture enthusiast. I'm not saying that he has invented a machine to snare those people, anymore than we are able to attract those who play games. I think he likes this stuff and it comes out. I used to maintain a fire in my heart about the split between him and Largo, his old partner on the site, and I had manufactured a Piro persona I could loathe readily. When you meet the guy, it's really, really hard to hate him. Believe me, I'm good at hating. I've got a degree in that shit. But he seems to detest himself in actuality.

For a long time I thought of this as a construct, emblematic of a deep cynicism and cleverness. This may have been projection. At any rate, I can tell you that it's quite genuine. Please do not stop your forum threads about how his site has gone downhill - those will always provide me succor as his erstwhile competitor - but do not doubt for a moment that his artistic paralysis represents a genuine malady. His body language communicates an encyclopedia of vicious self-assessments. He can't maintain eye contact. He looks away, as though the faces of other people somehow constitute a bright light.

So, I'm going over where he is today to receive my adjustment. Perhaps I will see you there.

:marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost: :marseylongpost2: :marseywords: https://www.penny-arcade.com/news/post/2004/04/26/here-he-goes-again-on-his-own

"Monday's comic might be kind of mean, Fred - I'm just letting you know," I said. He laughed and told me that was fine. He hadn't seen it, though.

What a change in that guy. What I said on Friday hasn't ceased being true, but it's true such a small percentage of the time that it's worth making a point of it. What the painfully shy or socially awkward among our number would be comforted to know is that interpersonal skills can improve through use to a startling degree. I know it's no comfort right away - there's fear associated with managing the variables in any conversation. It is as though I told you that the more you tame lions, the less likely you are to be devoured. But there is a type of "muscle" involved whose function can be improved through use, and I think that Piro's backbreaking con schedule has shaped him into a person quite capable of the work that comes with this strange territory.

A fair number of people came by expressly to soothe us, which was appreciated - but I think we're over the hump as far as Anime Con discomfort goes. Last year, I believe I said I felt like an invading force, a splinter or somesuch. There were some this year that went out of their way to make me feel like that. I felt more like an Ambassador this time around, from some imaginary place concerned primarily with gaming, like our booth was a kind of embassy for expatriates to confess their sins against the motherland.

I'm often asked to come to this room or that room at the conventions I attend, but I usually don't have the opportunity. This year, I made it my focus. It turns out that one can construct quite the efficacious Tycho trap with only a few cups and some Parrot Bay rum.

The patriarchy made up the science behind what healthy looks like in order to control the matriarchy's weight for their own sexual greed. There is no difference between a 150 pound woman and a 500 pound one and anybody who says the 500 pound woman is less healthy is only brainwashed by patriarch propaganda or is knowingly distributing said propaganda in an effort to steal our power. Being fat should be celebrated because it's a symbol of taking back the power and sticking it to the man. The fatter you are the more men hate you and the more men hate you the more power you have.
