Weekly Anime Poast #147

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17185826985118036.webp

Finished Kaiba which was a bit too arthouse for me.

Watched Otherside Picnic which was okay. Kind of STALKER Zone but with myths and legends vibe. Not great, but I'd watch another season.

Got started on MHA S3, it's just light entertainment that I absolutely blitz through, I'm 11 episodes in already. S3 is where Bakugo really starts to hit his stride as anything other than the comically stupid butthole and I'm glad he gets actual character development.

Dungeon Meshi finished its run, and just like Frieren immediately confirmed S2 which is fantastic news. If you aren't watching it you definitely should be.

One of my brothers recently showed me Undead Unluck. It is one of the worst anime I have ever seen, and one that could easily pass for an over-the-top parody of an anime. He told me that this is actually better than most new anime nowadays.

Based on the other new anime that I've watched since getting out of prison, I fear that he may be right. Is anime really this stupid nowadays?

Someone please tell me that high-quality patriciancore anime is still getting made. :marseysadcat:

I was in prison from September 2015 to April 2024.

Of all of the anime that have come out since my arrest, the one that looks the most interesting is The Night is Short, Walk on Girl. I'm a big fan of that kind of arthouse anime. Really, I like anything that's artful, intelligent, and/or features compelling storytelling. 99% of shonen and shojo does not even remotely meet that criteria. It simply isn't fit for a discerning anime snob. :fancywithwine:

Goldberg made online posts under many pseudonyms[7] and spent 14 to 20 hours on the internet per day.[18] After learning of his internet activities, the FBI attempted to place him under physical surveillance, but this was generally ineffective because for several weeks he did not leave his parents' house or open the front door.

They're based off light novels which are fricking incredibly good too

Sturgeon's Law is still in full effect, but the good news is that since we're getting more anime than ever, there's more good shows.

Dungeon Meshi and Frieren just aired and both are getting second seasons. Mushoku Tensei is airing now too.

From the last while, I'd say Violet Evergarden, A Place Further Than the Universe, Cyberpunk, Ping Pong, Blue Period, Girls' Last Tour, and IyaPan

Its not. Freiren is the current best of the last year. Its really gone downhill thanks to "reborn in another world + gimmick" dominating the industry. Its insane that standard fantasy minus video game level up systems are all you need to do well.

just finished watching kaiba and I really liked it even if I had trouble enjoying it at the end. I'm usually not a fan of episodic anime, but i think this show was better in the episodic form of the first half, rather than the serialized nature of the last half of the show. However, I admit that I might only feel this way because I had trouble feeling confident that I understood everything that was going on for the last few episodes.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17185976583670912.webp

my favorite part of the show was the art. I like how everything is consistently simple but super weird looking. Its a treat to look at and it synergizes well with how weird and philosophical the show is. It reminded me a lot of planescape torment and I'm surprised that googling this comparison didnt net any results. I really liked how they represented technology, because everything was always reduced everything to its simplest understandable interpretation. Like to go into your memories, they just zap you, then a little bubble comes out of their head they can jump into. It was like the visual equivalent of avoiding technobabble.

If you're looking for a short, memorable, thought provoking show to watch then I highly recommend kaiba.

therside Picnic which was okay. Kind of STALKER Zone but with myths and legends vibe. Not great, but I'd watch another season.

LN is better, they fricked with the order way too much in the anime. But its is literally "Roadside Picnic", the inspiration for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but based on Japanese myths and creepy pasta on 2ch.

Mysterious Disappearances has the same feeling this season, without the fricking of the source material

There was a Baki VS Kengan Ashura OVA on Netflix. It made me sneed. Kengan is a really trash ripoff of Baki, It's like a fanfic that somehow got so popular they did a crossover. So now KA is in the same universe as Baki and all the r-slur femboy baki-ripoff characters are canonically identically as strong as S tier Baki characters. I have no idea why the baki mangaka allowed this to be made when he's fresh off a multi year arc who's only point was a circle jerk over classic Baki characters being superior over all comers. And additionally the current arc is focused on Jack, who has the potential to become the lineal champ in this arc (pickle is #1 after cucking both baki and ogre, and the comic seems to be building up a to a jack rematch), but the kengan OVA has him lose decisively to a naruto character???? After this Kengan shit in retrospect the only point of the last 3 years of Baki was to prove that sumo wrestlers are huge kitties.

Furthermore, Dead Dead Demons De de destruction is really really good. I didn't read the comic but if the story ends up being satisfying it could be an all time classic.

Additionally I almost missed Kaiju 8 because it looks like generic shonenshit but it's actually good for a pure action cartoon
