I tried watching once, I’m a moe anime fan - non non biyori is kino, but it was the epitome of “baby show” I swear. Like there was zero text, let alone subtext, to grab on to.

Precure is good, but you have to pick the right one to watch. Some of them are for babies. I recommend Heartcatch, Go! Princess, and Smile for a more comedy focused one. The first two ever are also decent, but they basically copied the two main characters from the original for the second series.
Also when you watch these try to get a hotkey to skip 5 seconds so you can skip through the transformation sequences after you've seen them enough times. It's pretty much an inevitability there will be at least one per episode.

Going to break and read Shamiko's manga? There's actually barely enough for a 3rd season there but I'm not sure if we'll get one/when it would be since it'd be edging right up against where the manga is at.

Yeah, except it got farmed out to a low budget studio who themselves outsourced it to an even lower budget studio. The manga was great (all of Mizukami's series are, but it was the first of his I read), but it's looking like a Berzerk situation (though not actually quite that bad, just lower mediocre).
Be aware there may have been a major sub error in ep 6 depending on what version you watched (it's in the official subs). When Sakura is talking about Shamiko taking on her little sister's curse, she means Shamiko's sister Ryoko (which is why Ryoko isn't super sickly and why Shamiko's health took a major downturn after Ryoko was born), not her own little sister Momo. (Loop Subs seem good though, that's the only other one I checked.)

low budget isn't in itself an issue, i have no idea how much action or whatever happens in the manga, but it looked like a pretty calm manga from what I've seen.

It's a battle manga. A more well thought-out one than most, but it still certainly has a lot of action. Honestly it's the direction I'm mostly worried about, both in the action and calm parts.

Yofukashi no Uta is pretty fun. I might checkout the new Tokyo Mew Mew, I enjoyed that when I was younger.
