Weekly Anime Post 49

I dont really have much to talk about this week. I watched the first few episodes of 'NHK ni yokoso' (3 I think), but didnt have time to watch more this week. So far idk if I like it, its really awkward sometimes, and I found the (pretty loud) music that often plays in the background annoying. I will keep watching for now though.

For suggestions, I think the best way to do it is pool suggestions one week, than cast a vote on those suggestions next week. That way there should be a discussion every two weeks :marseysal:

So, if you have an anime that you would like everyone to watch and discuss, put it in the comments.

I didn’t watch the thing because it sounded boring :marseyclueless: I still think a book club of sorts is a good idea though.

Meanwhile, I’m continuing to get through Gundam SEED. It’s honestly a great series and I don’t get why some people poo poo on it. I just wish characters were drawn with more defined faces.

It does copy 0079 in a lot of ways, but I didn’t think this was a weakness because a) it’s a solid story, and b) they honestly did a few things better this time around. SEED does a good job with its morally grey setting and anti-war message since ZAFT leadership isn’t as ridiculously evil as Zeon’s. Whereas the One Year War feels like a WWII esque conflict that needed to be fought — you can’t just stand around doing nothing while Gihren rains colonies on people — the Valentine War felt more pointless and avoidable, thus the main characters are sympathetic in their quest to deescalate since no one faction was correct or capable of giving the world a lasting peace. The worldbuilding around Coordinators is also more interesting to me than the weird Newtype whatnot from UC.

People seem to complain about the characters a lot, but the only one that really bugs me is Flay. Kira is angsty but doesn’t monologue like other main characters, which makes him much more bearable. I also liked the addition of a recurring team of “bad guy” ace pilots to hunt the Archangel. Meanwhile, and in contrast to ZAFT being more reasonable than Zeon, it’s interesting that the resident Char clone is actually a malevolent character as opposed to being one of the more honorable ace pilots. Even if he wears the mask and has pretty blonde hair, Rau seemed to be written as a deliberate inversion of a Char clone, and it helps to make him stand out as his own character. The show also has plenty of unique plot beats to stand out from 0079, like the Archangel’s defection from the Federation and the latter’s slide into antagonistic territory, for example.

I’m not finished yet, but I look forward to the ending. I’ve already heard how SEED Destiny drops the ball in comparison, but at this point I might sit through it anyway like I sat through 00 Season 2. I’ll probably take a break first by finishing Victory or rewatching The Origin.

I’m telling you, man. It’s a hyper realistic and gritty sci-fi war story.

Well in the original series Lacus sang for like 6 episodes in a row.

Lots of Beam spam.

And SEED Destiny takes a giant dumb in it as they bring back Kira "Jesus" Yamato.

On the other hand Murrue Ramius is a total BAE.

SEED Is popular for mech designs and with women.

If you finish SEED and are still enjoying it, go find the side stories like RED Astray. Not as good as the UC side stories but they are great.
