Spanish moved lots and lots of Chinese & Japanese there between the 15th and 18th Century to help build their trade empire. There was a massively lucrative silver trade between across the Pacific from Acapulco to Manilla and then on to the Pearl River in China. The Bongs, Dutch and Portugese were forever trying to raid these huge Spanish "Manilla Galleons"- the IRL Robinson Crusoe was one of these pirates.
