Gotta be one of the weirder Christian dogma. Afaik Catholics actually accept and believe in evolution, so I think creationism stuff is a purely American ideology. Well used to be.

I don't think it's weird.
It seems obvious today with how deeply we can probe life itself. But clearly it was not obvious even two centuries ago otherwise Darwin's work wouldn't have been revolutionary. In the 18th century we had cars and movies, hardly a primitive time. So even people who are not that far away in time an culture wouldnt understand the idea unless it was explained to them.
You could say the same thing about a lot of scientific topics. Heliocentrism. Seems obvious to us but would be hard to come up with based on pure observation.
