Marvel's had three different actors playing the same superhero simultaneously in the same film. Having one actor play the lead and later a second string villain isn't a stretch.

Others have already hypothesised that they also could just write a parallel universe, where Tony Stank was orphaned and adopted by the von Doom family - or adopted the title by poll deed, or his ego overran his talent early on in this parallel universe, leading to an ego wound and a horrific disfiguring accident sending him spiraling into a heel turn and adopting the persona, etc etc etc
