eva (@eva.computer):

real question:

why are you not allowed to tell people keep yourself safe on social media?

i feel like this is one of the few universally enforced things across basically every platform so there must be some reason

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

in short: aiding, abetting, commanding, counselling, inducing, or procuring homicide is a crime; actionable threats or extortion over interstate comms are a crime; can be an element of a civil tort

When Reddit set up proper blocking, one of the ringleaders of a long running harassment & manipulation group that had plagued the site for over a decade,

Went on an extended "we are fricked" villain monologue. Full meltdown.

The group left reddit shortly after & moved offsite.

Anna Phylaxis (@quatoria.bsky.social):

Some of us not only like fighting, we got way too good at it on twitter, and we intentionally learned to step the heck back, because it turns out that getting good at fighting, and liking fighting, and fighting all the time are AWFUL FOR YR MENTAL HEALTH.

it's not that livejournal was all that great, it's just that LJ was the only network that clearly worked backward from actual social patterns field-tested in, like, the molten social heck of middle school, and designed software around that

I miss having a selection of usericons to apply to a post or comment.

I guess I could recreate that with the attached picture feature

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

OKAY, HERE WE GO. I am going to be, for once, actually asking you all a question, with an actual question mark and all, but there are some Rules to this audience participation exercise.

1. Go to synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/profile and scroll down to the "Connect" section.

Captcha Check

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

2. See that thing under "Interests"? Those are, essentially, topic keywords you can list in your profile. You can click on them to find other people who have also listed that thing. You can have a bunch of them; I forget what the exact number is, but it's like 150 at least.

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

3. It doesn't mean "stuff I post about": plenty of people list stuff they never post about. It's more for, here are these things that are important to me / that I am into, I am listing them so other people who are into them can find me. We list the popular ones! www.dreamwidth.org/interests?vi...

Captcha Check

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

4. Interests were an important person-discovery mechanism on LJ back in the day (also the proximate cause of Strikethrough, sigh, but that's another rant). They don't serve as well for that on DW, because "interest" isn't intuitive to people anymore.

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

(The prompts at account creation also try to steer people to suggestions for interests they can list by prompting people with some topics to avoid Blank Box Syndrome, but the prompt is a little weird and leads to people filling them out weirdly, but that's a separate issue.)

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

5. I am pondering renaming them to ... something else that would get across "hey, these are keywords you can use to help you find people who are into the same things you're into". However, none of us can come up with a good name for it.

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

6. This is because LITERALLY EVERYTHING we can think of that other sites use for this concept is already in use as vocabulary elsewhere on the site, such as:

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

  • tags

  • keywords

  • subjects

  • themes

or very strongly means something else:

  • likes

or we just absolutely hate it

  • topics

or we're just shitposting

  • [this is good]s

(if you got that joke you are probably one of my ex-coworkers)

rahaeli (@rahaeli.bsky.social):

SO, ALL THAT SAID, HERE IS THE QUESTION:

Is there a single word you can think of that encapsulates this idea in a way that would make you immediately go "oh, they want me to list off my categories of 'shit I am into' so I can find other people who are also into that" if you saw it?

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

  • Cohort

  • Niche

  • Interest

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

Everyone has a line beyond which a belief is no longer acceptable, no longer a political belief, but is simply institutionalised and mass-enacted sociopathy.

Some people, for whatever reason, keep trying to move that line for society back over to "gas chambers"

Concepts of a Plan for "Himbo Heist" (@legalminimum.bsky.social):

I often wonder how much this is related to pay-on-scan inventory methods.

Dio (@dungeongilgameshi.bsky.social):

Can you explain your thinking?

Concepts of a Plan for "Himbo Heist" (@legalminimum.bsky.social):

It's tough in 300-character increments but I'll try.

At stores like Walmart and Target, the retailer doesn't take title to the inventory while it's on the shelf. Instead it's managed by a process called pay-on-scan.

Concepts of a Plan for "Himbo Heist" (@legalminimum.bsky.social):

The instant the product is sold to the customer, the retailer takes title to it and transfers that title to the customer. But while it's sitting on shelf at the retailer, the retailer doesn't hold title. Title is held by the manufacturer.

Concepts of a Plan for "Himbo Heist" (@legalminimum.bsky.social):

Now think how returns work in that context. I put 100 items on the shelf at Target (for example). 10 of them get stolen. 90 of them get sold. Target owes me the purchase price for how many? All 100? 90/100?

Concepts of a Plan for "Himbo Heist" (@legalminimum.bsky.social):

So layer onto that: I am now telling Target that they owe me money for products that they have no record of selling. How do they know the difference between selling 90/100 items and the other 10 got stolen and I only ever shipped them 90 items?

Dio (@dungeongilgameshi.bsky.social):

and this is why it is a Lays employee stocking the shelves at Krogers? They don't track the inventory until it is sold and they don't want your last point to happen.

Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):

Kroger does track that inventory when it comes in - every retailer, when an outside vendor arrives with product to shelve, has a process to verify the contents of the delivery against a bill of lading, whether they technically legally take title to the products at that time

Concepts of a Plan for "Himbo Heist" (@legalminimum.bsky.social):

That part, where a Lays employee is doing the shelving, is related to category management, I think.
