Cannot make this shit up.
Woman next door, who has not said a single R sound in her 30+ year Boston life, is hanging out the front door of her house holding a cup of Dunkies, wearing a Celtics sweatshirt, and screaming CONNAH (Conner) GET YA BUTT INSIDE IT'S COLD OUT YA GONNA CATCH COVID.
Serenity "Lady of Shallots" Dee 🍜 (@sapphixy.bsky.social):
I once came across a TikTok from a Bostonian objecting vehemently and sincerely to a TikTok from some dude in central MA giving proper pronunciation of MA place names because he had a mostly rhotic accent. (I say "mostly" because he still pronounced Woburn like a Southie.)
Julia S. (@booktweeting.bsky.social):
the phoneme fairies gave the people of Central Massachusetts the ability to pronounce an interstitial R but took away their ability to pronounce interstitial T in exchange
this is an impor-un difference
Serenity "Lady of Shallots" Dee 🍜 (@sapphixy.bsky.social):
are you telling me that for some people it's not "Wuster" but "Wusser"?
Julia S. (@booktweeting.bsky.social):
Wissdah
Serenity "Lady of Shallots" Dee 🍜 (@sapphixy.bsky.social):
there's a Hampton Roads (e.g. Norfolk, Virginia Beach) accent that seems to have lost all consonants except for some nasals
"Feather and Fin" became "e'erãhĩ"
Julia S. (@booktweeting.bsky.social):
hyperlocal pronunciation is so interesting to me
Serenity "Lady of Shallots" Dee 🍜 (@sapphixy.bsky.social):
Yeah, I'm not even sure how to transcribe the sound that the /ð/ in feather became
/ʍ/, maybe
Ms. Penny Oaken (@skywitches.net):
There's an accent, i don't know what the name of it is, that transforms "allright" into aɪ̯ŋeɪ̯, just eliding every consonant, a glide of vowels thru the sinuses
Serenity "Lady of Shallots" Dee 🍜 (@sapphixy.bsky.social):
I know that when I code switch into Black American English "alright" sounds more like "aight".
