That's not entirely true. Mods don't own a community (seen by the impossibility of deleting a sub, by the ease with which moderators get removed if they do something to affect Reddit's finances, and most recently by all the new measures imposed to restrict protests such as no longer being able to make a community private for good).

Reddit does derive revenue from communities, so hosting a sub may not be paid (doubtful that would even work, at least in its current state), but it most probably compensates by providing revenue (mods themselves also view ads, unless they pay a subscription or still have premium from a previous implementation, just like regular users).

The very first response lol. A reddit mod is nothing more than another consumer of reddit.

It's like being a hall monitor. You can get other people in trouble, but at the end of the day, you're just another student.
