The TL;DR is

If you want just, like, "@skywitches.net", you can buy a suitable domain name thru bluesky & they have directions for setting it as your handle.

If you want @potzer.feralbear.org, you can buy a domain name thru namecheap, google, etc & configure there

Bluesky's service is just "get the domain at a slight discount, set it as your handle, and you're off"

Namecheap etc you pay them instead, configure a DNS record, tell bluesky to look at the record, that authenticates your DID as using that handle on atproto, & they check it again occasionally
