Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
For fun, I decided to see what How Soon Is Now sounds like as played back thru a chorus of detuned electrified banjos and a drowned-out mandolin
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Trying (and failing) to find the right attack / decay / sustain / release envelope for guitar strings but found the right one for the banjo/mandolin
Fluff Orpington (@flufforpington.bsky.social):
I've only got Garage Band, but would it be possible to find that banjo sound with it? I dabble in music during the winter months

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Sadly, I don't think there's a way to export this FM synth from this app to garage band. It's a discontinued/withdrawn app that recreates what the plugin for the company's DAW does. I can tell you what I did to make this, tho
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
There's three envelopes, the filter envelope has a 3 ms attack, a 1.75 second decay, -28 db sustain, 90 ms release; the amplifier envelope has a 25ms attack, 750 ms decay, -24db sustain, 15 second release; the modulation envelope 61 ms delay, 200 ms attack, 3 s decay, 1 s release (1/?)
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
There's three analog synth sources, first is a symmetric square wave, second is a sawtooth three cents uptuned, third is a sawtooth 12 cents uptuned & sync'ed to the square. These go thru a 24-bit low-pass filter with about 80% drive, 50% envelope, resonance about 30%, 50% keyboard follow (2/?)
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
That signal is put thru a rectifier distortion 1/3rd imposed, then thru a comb filter, then thru some delay and chorus, settings on the comb, delay, and chorus are to taste.
(3/?)
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
On this one I also patched a low frequency oscillator to the square wave and another LFO to the unsynced sawtooth to slowly vary their pitches slightly, to warm / analog-up the sound. Subtle but nice, and I did that early in composition, before adding the comb, delay, & chorus, so it might get lost
