Hi I'm Sammie and I am very into Yuri manga, the emergency alert system, queer history, and early 00s rhythm games
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Hi Sammie! I live in the shadow of the KRLD towers, 1080AM, which is the Primary Entry Point for EAS for much of North Texas and S. Oklahoma. Everything in this neighbourhood is on a dedicated power distribution, with only one provider, the city itself - B/C of KRLD's national security importance
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
I live in the one of the few neighbourhoods in Texas NOT subject to outages b/c of Texas' power grid failures
Sammie βοΈπ (@sammie.gay):
Oh we're actually pretty close! You might be able to answer a question for ME tho! Does living near a PEP come with more rigorous/frequent testing?
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
I don't think so - testing of reception equipment is pretty standardised, because of the square cube law, it would only be stressful of reception equipment if it were less than a kilometer from the radio tower. Which my childhood school and home were. The signal bled to everything with a diode
Sammie βοΈπ (@sammie.gay):
Oh my god I can imagine. Just everything in your house emitting a low hum constantly!!
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
The phone - KRLD. The school PA - KRLD. The park chain link fence - KRLD. I built a crystal radio as a kid and it had one station, in every harmonic and subharmonic of KRLD, no antenna wire required
Sammie βοΈπ (@sammie.gay):
I can imagine building a crystal radio as a kid and being a little freaked out about that. What does krld broadcast when not being used for eas? Or is it dedicated exclusively to that?
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
It was news, weather, & sports on the normal AM audio for decades, but now in the past few years the station carries call-in talk radio and evangelism and bottom-barrel political shows. It's embarassing
Sammie βοΈπ (@sammie.gay):
Sigh, of course
