Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

So far the "hard sci-fi" criticism I have of The Expanse (outside of the Dark Matter realm physics of the macguffin) are two things,

1. Epstein drive (minor, no big deal)

2. interplanetary railguns accurate to what must be incredible fractions of arcsecond. (Major, sucked me out of suspension)

Curt Gebers (@curtgebers.bsky.social):

Is that any higher aiming accuracy requirement than the Hubble Space Telescope?

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Telescopes have the benefit of image composition & stabilisation over multiple collections, in post.

Railguns don't.

It can be addressed by attitudinal thrusters in the projectile & a guidance system …

Curt Gebers (@curtgebers.bsky.social):

They can stack images for sure. But as I understand it (and I could be wrong about this), the Hubble takes up to 45 minutes of continuous exposure for a single image, and it has to hold the field of view perfectly still on the image sensor for that entire time while it orbits the planet every 95 min

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

To think of it a different way -

The star being observed is emitting a huge number of photons, millions of which (despite being a near infinitesimal fraction of its output) happen to be arriving at our telescope. We get lots of catch chances.

A rail gun, otoh - just one launch chance.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The smallest perturbation in velocity, angle, even the heat expansion of the track, can affect whether it reaches the intended target

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The advantage of rail guns is that they allow a very, very high kinetic energy. They still have the same drawbacks as say, firing a .50 cal, with respect to precision.

And the people who are stubborn enough to overcome the friction of using your tool, will have an oversize influence on the service.

Karens. I'm talking Karens.

(I speak as a white-hat Karen)

Pavel (@spavel.bsky.social):

If you are making a tool, you need to have a very strong point of view about how that tool will be used. Otherwise you are shifting that burden onto your users - and if using your tool is a burden, they simply won't.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

You may think that you want Only Karens / Neighbourhood Watch / People With More Time Than Most to use your tool. That user friction is the solution to at-scale abuse of the tool.

You are almost certainly wrong.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

It took thirteen transgender women 6 months, tens of thousands of abuse reports & 130,000 activists & a threat of advertiser boycott to get Reddit to enforce SWR1 on /r/TumblrInAction & /r/SocialJusticeInAction.

After two years of violations.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

It took a user riot (by MRAs) for Reddit to close /r/MGTOW, a year & a half after Reddit adopted SWR1, a year & a half after quarantining it, a year & a half after it was cited by the FBI as a gender-based Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremism group.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

These kinds of foot-drags, where the burden was on the user base to make the case for enforcement, to make a service provider keep the promises they've made,

are the cause of trust thermocline inversions.

I still don't understand why we're ingesting it. It's always bothered me. Also, isn't there evidence linking it to bone cancer in black boys? Just checking.

Either way, removing it is definitely a sign of major divergment from normal.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

We have fluoride in tap water because of studies done showing a massive reduction in caries (cavities) in kids & adults in areas where the groundwater naturally had fluoride. And since then, studies that show that i.e. fluoridated toothpaste dramatically drops cavities.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The studies that show a heightened correlation to bone cancer, etc are simply correlations- they aren't showing causation.

There are studies that show a correlation between consuming apples and higher incidence of cancer. It's not the apples causing the cancer.
