Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Hello new folks!

Since many (most?) of you followed me due to the mod lists and being in anti-extremist starter packs, I think I'll talk about moderation - how to spot the trolls. (Useful if you want to make blocklists)

There's many ways to approach this, but this morning, let's tackle sexism.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The "first filter" or first screen for spotting sexism is The Four D's — Denial, Dismissal, Defense, and Derailment.

These are four rhetorical methods that are used in i.e. climate change denialism, but also (because people accept them) they're used for misogynist speech.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The second filter is what @vortexegg.com calls "leveraging the ambient bigotry" — making femininity / feminism / that-which-is-not-cishetmale the "punching bag", the "butt of the joke".

This includes such things as

"Labeling Enemies As Women or Sissies"

and

"Being Gay Is Shameful"

coding

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

By amplifying an ambient culture of misogyny, these kinds of speech acts undermine respect, safety, and dignity of all women — it communicates the base premise that women are bad, femininity something to be ashamed of.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

The third filter is the Nine Types of Reply Guys, courtesy of @sbarolo.bsky.social & @shrewshrew.bsky.social

Their thread also contextualises the famous SeaLion type as misogynist

Scott Barolo (@sbarolo.bsky.social):

Wow, it's the 5th anniversary of the #9ReplyGuys thread on Twitter, posted by me & @shrewshrew.bsky.social.

#WomenInSTEM who post about harassment & sexual misconduct get a lot of misogynistic replies.

We (a woman & a man in science) tried to categorize them.

THE NINE TYPES OF REPLY GUYS 🧵

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

And the final filter, the "algorithm" to decode a bit of speech to determine if it's misogynist hate speech -

1. Is it abusive?

2. Is it targeting someone else?

3. Is it targeting that person (or group) on the basis of being a woman / girl / feminine?

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

That last test is credit to Philine Zeinert, Nanna Inie, & Leon Derczynski, "Annotating Online Misogyny", which tackles common sexist speech, & introduces a term, "neosexism", which is Denial, Dismissal, Defense, and Derailment in response to holding misogynist speech to account.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

BlueSky is better when communities band together to define and reinforce community boundaries, and the block feature & blocklists are the basic building blocks (heh) of that defense.

Misogyny is unacceptable, and rejecting it is important — for women, and for defeating bigotry.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

I don't have a specific blocklist for only misogynists, because 99% of the time, misogyny & misogynist speech is "comorbid" with other toxic behaviours — the Venn diagram of White Identity Extremism & misogyny, for example, is a tight circle.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

(Not all misogynists are White Identity Extremists, but all White Identity Extremists are misogynists)
