Nash (@radiodeadair.com):

The Windows file system hasn't been updated since 1993 and we still have both "Control Panel" and "Settings" colliding with each other for over a decade but nah you're right fam this is the play here

Ars Technica (@arstechnica.com):

Setsune Wave (@setsune.bsky.social):

It's fun to dig into Sound settings and see how many generations back each additional panel design goes.

Freya ΘΔ 🏳️⚧️🐉 (@freya.pet):

there's some exe's squirreled away in system32 that'll show the windows 3.1 file explorer it's wild

LordTheodoreXIII (@lordtheodore13.bsky.social):

For real? I wanna see this

Freya ΘΔ 🏳️⚧️🐉 (@freya.pet):

if you go into your start menu and search 'odbc data sources', in that settings menu, pretty much anything that lets you select a file will use the windows 3.1 explorer

mindstorm8191 (@mindstorm8191.bsky.social):

That's crazy. You would think that through all the iterations of Windows, M$ would have had file access modularized, then updated that module through each iteration.

But apparently new versions end up breaking old apps like this. So they have to keep the old file access systems in there

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

There was, until 5 years ago, an inherent design flaw which meant that a batch file or command line using "LOGIN" or w/ever w/o an explicit extension, expecting to invoke the .EXE, could invoke a .COM with the same filename stem sitting in the PATH …

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

In 1991 I used that to yoink the Novell lab's admin credentials. So it persisted for 30 years
