Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Since the topic of Warrant Canaries are popping back up, it's interesting to know that Reddit used to (used to) have one in their annual Transparency Report — but it was absent from that report right after their irregular* shutdown of a number of subreddits … which all had one thing in common …
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Reddit's Official Explanation for shutting down /r/coontown and "a handful of other communities" is that they violated the "spirit of the policy".
They all had one element in common — they were all being operated in part by Joshua Ryne Goldberg, who was being investigated by the FBI at that time.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Goldberg, using violent extremist rhetoric, operated these subreddits and others to incite terrorist violence.
He was being pursued at that time by the FBI for directing an ISIS terrorist incident, the "Draw Mohammed" shooting in Garland, TX.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
The Reddit Warrant Canary was almost certainly removed because the FBI subpoenaed Reddit for all of Goldberg's activities on the platform, making it the first national security letter / warrants they would receive which they were gagged from disclosing. That is the reasonable explanation.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
That's the interesting backstory about the disappearance of Reddit's Warrant Canary.
The infuriating thing about it is that the same stipulated policy - "making things worse for everyone else" - was never officially used again, despite it being extremely applicable to i.e. /r/the_donald
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Another infuriating thing — we know for a fact that Reddit took no action against the people who were operating those subreddits alongside Goldberg, until 2022 - with the introduction of the Moderator Code of Conduct. Until then, they just kept churning out harassment subreddits, one after another.
