Her Royal Majesty, Kristin I (@hrm-kristin-i.bsky.social):
I am not a paleontologist, because i was told it was impractical, but if i were I'd be one of the contrarians who hold that dromaeosaurs and troodontids were secondarily flightless birds.
Liliana (@liliana.transsexual.gay):
Possibly. I think it's hard to draw a line in evolution about whether something is still what it came from or if it's more like what it's becoming. But I can see it
Her Royal Majesty, Kristin I (@hrm-kristin-i.bsky.social):
Honestly it does seem that dromaeosaurs did descend from flight or gliding capable theropods in the Jurassic but yeah where the line between avian and non-avian theropods actually is is very fuzzy
Liliana (@liliana.transsexual.gay):
I know they're pretty sure that microraptor could glide because they found a fossil that had impressions of flight feathers, and I'd be surprised if it was the only one
Her Royal Majesty, Kristin I (@hrm-kristin-i.bsky.social):
Yeah! And it was not the only one!
And again in the most basic sense, anyone today would see a microraptor glide around and call it a bird
Liliana (@liliana.transsexual.gay):
Totally. The only thing that seems unbirdlike to me is the lack of a beak, but I don't know if that's a necessary defining feature of birds or not
Her Royal Majesty, Kristin I (@hrm-kristin-i.bsky.social):
Lots of unambiguous late Cretaceous birds had teeth!
Liliana (@liliana.transsexual.gay):
And I remember that modern birds still have the genes for teeth, they just aren't switched on anymore
Sage 🏳️⚧️ (@trans.bsky.social):
WE NEED TO TURN BACK ON THE TOOTH GENE FOR BORDS THIS IS IMPORTANT
Kiraculous the Cyborg🏳️⚧️ (@kiraculous.net):
sage no. please you can have the louisville cardinal that is enough tooth birds for anyone
Sage 🏳️⚧️ (@trans.bsky.social):
hear me out tho what if birds could smile
MayaScientist (@madscientist212.bsky.social):
Between this and the dorse I am starting to think you are trying to create a plague of cursed animals to unleash on us all.
If so, do they take requests? I can think of a few people that could use a visit from a dorse or a... smiling magpie? The last one sounds so innocent.
Kiraculous the Cyborg🏳️⚧️ (@kiraculous.net):
don't mention the forse for the love of all things good and holy not the dorse
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
