Chinese travelers thousands of years ago described Indian people smearing cow shit all over their houses for religious purity. Even today you can find Hindus online that insist cow piss has healing properties.

Overall an extremely fascinating phenomenon. The Aryans that arrived at India valued cattle as a resource but had no problem eating them. It was the subsequent generations that elevated cows to holiness.

Aryans had already elevated the cows to holiness in Vedas.

The Rig-Vedic Aryans that placed the highest importance on the storm god (Indra) were very different from the Indians that smeared cow shit all over their houses and drank glassfuls of cow piss to cure diseases. Cows were important as a source of dairy and a sign of wealth to the original Aryan tribes so killing and stealing them was destroying someone's livelihood and therefore prohibited. The actual emphasis on the holiness of cows came in the subsequent texts.
