A lot of 40s men aren't looking to meet women over 40 so wouldn't be interested. The age range stuff is difficult- from what I've heard things like 30 and over, 40 and over etc events result in all the men focused on the youngest women there (so over 40 and the 40something women are getting the attention from any 40s men that do come plus 50s, 60s men)
Back in the day, I was told, anecdotally, that women <35 would avoid singles' events as something you would only attend if you were desperate.
