This isn’t at all what holes were supposed to be. Holes were meant to be secondary feeds, admin-created, after we achieved critical mass of some specific theme or topic taking up too much of the main feed. It’s then a subforum, accessible via a graphic or dropdown from tbr mainpage, and via subdomain.
The other use for holes would be a more involved version wherein we rehome other communities under our umbrella. Take stupidpol, for example - in the original hole concept, it would be stupidpol.rdrama.net and it would have its own admins, its own graphics, its own unique functionality, awards, whatever. You’d also be able to use your rDrama account and currency there, and, likewise, stupidpollers would be able to use their accounts on the regular site. You could even add stupidpol threads to your main feeds if you’d like. Stupidpol jannies would have more or less complete autonomy over their hole, though. A site-within-a-site.
What we have here is a useless system that just adds what is essentially a flair to the posts within it and none of it serves any purpose aside from minimizing posts’ visibility and the userbase is r-slurred and doesn’t yet get that.

I think the main draw of holes is it lets people be jannies, which is a power trip for some people.

Tbh I dont really think we need holes with the userbase as we have it yet, there just arent that many posts that spam of any kind is too annoying to scroll through. As you said, holes dont really serve a purpose except limiting visibility, and I think most stuff that gets posted to holes would have been posted to the main feed if holes didnt exist anyway (eg the slackernews hole), so the only new content holes might bring to the platform is the occasional anime picture or furry porn art.
I think the [community].rdrama.net idea is the best idea for holes, though of course it would depend on how many people would visit these communities.
As it is now I personally dont think Id ever actually use holes apart from the comment sections, cause why would I willingly miss out on those sweet updooterinos?
