I think the main strength that 5E has is that while it got dumbed down and streamlined, it moved a little bit faster and that is a good thing when your group is online and everyone is an adult with offline obligations as well.

I'm being somewhat hypocritical here by preferring 13th Age, an even more faster streamlined (and chudded) system that lacks even measured distances. Average combats that aren't elaborate boss encounters tend towards the 30 minute mark. Enemy actions however tend to be far more impactful than 5E non-spellcaster actions.
