I have this issue with older people without any cultural touchstones in common.

I have a list of things im ready to talk about at any time to connect with all agegroups :marseyautism: in no particular order:

  • The weather.

  • Their job. Find comminalities with my job and gab. "So how long have you been doing x? is it harder now ir easier nowadays? You enjoy it?"

  • Politics. Dont go too hard. Most people are fine with "both sides suck"

  • Family life.

  • hobbies.

  • Food

  • Creative pursuits.

  • Random funny life stories.

The key is to ask questions like a news reporter. Roughly, don't grill them. If all else fails, standing beside them watching something is fine. Let the convo die after an appropriate time - you dont need to talk for hours.

Does this come naturally to people or is it a learned skill.

It took a long time to hone my autism. 20 years or so of awkward "im not fricking interested" convo's before realizing I didnt have any friends. I still get tired of it but drink some coffee and just "interview" people.
