Apparently the word Xmas has its origins in christian shorthand. Missionaries would write the word as +mas (imagine a crucifix) and that got changed to an X because of typewriters

Well I would say that there are 2 Chirstmases simultaniously the first one is the consumerist gift-giving family holiday, and the second is the birth of Christ holiday, and the first one is more dominant, and only smaller part of the population cares about the second one.
