!catholics !christians Lent has begun! I didn't make a thread on Ash Wednesday since it's not a holy day of obligation.

First Reading

God said to Noah and to his sons with him:

"See, I am now establishing my covenant with you

and your descendants after you

and with every living creature that was with you:

all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals

that were with you and came out of the ark.

I will establish my covenant with you,

that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed

by the waters of a flood;

there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth."

God added:

"This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come,

of the covenant between me and you

and every living creature with you:

I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign

of the covenant between me and the earth.

When I bring clouds over the earth,

and the bow appears in the clouds,

I will recall the covenant I have made

between me and you and all living beings,

so that the waters shall never again become a flood

to destroy all mortal beings."

-Genesis 9:8-15

Responsorial Psalm

R. (cf. 10) Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;

teach me your paths,

Guide me in your truth and teach me,

for you are God my savior.

R. Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.

Remember that your compassion, O LORD,

and your love are from of old.

In your kindness remember me,

because of your goodness, O LORD.

R. Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.

Good and upright is the LORD,

thus he shows sinners the way.

He guides the humble to justice,

and he teaches the humble his way.

R. Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.

-Psalms 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

Second Reading

Beloved:

Christ suffered for sins once,

the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous,

that he might lead you to God.

Put to death in the flesh,

he was brought to life in the Spirit.

In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison,

who had once been disobedient

while God patiently waited in the days of Noah

during the building of the ark,

in which a few persons, eight in all,

were saved through water.

This prefigured baptism, which saves you now.

It is not a removal of dirt from the body

but an appeal to God for a clear conscience,

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

who has gone into heaven

and is at the right hand of God,

with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.

-1 Peter 3:18-22

Verse Before the Gospel

One does not live on bread alone,

but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:4b

Gospel

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert,

and he remained in the desert for forty days,

tempted by Satan.

He was among wild beasts,

and the angels ministered to him.

After John had been arrested,

Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:

"This is the time of fulfillment.

The kingdom of God is at hand.

Repent, and believe in the gospel."

-Mark 1:12-25

Today my priest spoke about how Lent is a time for healing the wounds caused by sin. While Jesus is famous for healing ailments of the body, his true work was healing ailments of the soul. On an unrelated note, I think God's covenant with Noah proves that global warming won't lead to apocalyptic flooding.

Welcome to the first and hopefully last Mass discussion thread that isn't a pinned post! I got the idea to make these into their own hole a few days ago, and I'm still not quite sure how it works. In any case, it's still in the works, if you want one thing to help it along, sub to the hole.

Anyway, this week in mass, we heard from the prophet Isaiah, who I always get mixed up with Isiah Thomas, so I spent the whole week thinking of Detroit's most famous albino as some sort of seer. Also, our new priest's old church has an altar dedicated to St. Isiah (I'm not kidding), so I may be getting it confused with him. I always get those two prophets confused anyways, so I'm still in the clear there. Last week's Bible discussion has been postponed until next week so that it might be more thought out.

It's been awhile since I've gone to confession, but I've been to Communion a lot this week, so let's discuss that instead! The Eucharist was my introduction to the Catholic faith, and it's by far my favorite part of it. After years of not believing in God, I found myself, this past year, really craving the body of Christ. I still don't fully understand transubstantiation, but I truly feel that, every time I partake, my body is being changed into His, and I feel Him in my heart as I am filled with the body of Him who gave His body for me. I also believe in the Real Presence, even if I don't understand it. I've had some great experiences with it in my life, my favorite was talking to a girl who refused to come to dinner at my house until I told her that I couldn't drink it unless I believed it was real, which I always do. I'd only had one other girlfriend who knew I was Catholic (we joked about a possible marriage), and I was thrilled to have finally found one who was ok with it, because I know my standards make dating a lot harder for me. We dated for about a year before my conversion and relationship with God deepened, and she never wanted to date me again, despite my insistence that I was exactly who I had been with a few different opinions. While that was really painful, I understand her reticence. I was really

Hello! I'd like to give a special welcome to all new members of the community, whether they found us through /h/the_ivory_tower's ping group, or /h/proana's ping group, or found us because they took a wrong turn on their way to watch some WPD gore. It's good to have you here, though I'll admit I'm sad to see /h/proana close, it was a good place for those in the struggle.

Let's do this week's announcement. Now that Soren has posted the official banners for the new houses (the banners are absolutely amazing), we have our finalized house colors. I'm starting a fundraiser to purchase House Edgy's colors. They will cost 16,000 dramacoin, and I will divide any excess equally between members at the end of the fundraiser. I'll give a special thanks to any donors of 2k+ dramacoin.
How's everyone's Masses been this week? I got to visit my own parish this week. The trip was uneventful, though it did make me realize how fast I've learned Latin. I've been learning it for only two weeks, and I'm already singing the Proper for Pentecost.
How's everyone's bussies been this week?
I've been in a bit of an rut myself, I won't bore you with the details. You know how that goes.
I'm also still in a rut on making Marseys for House Edgy to use. I'll get on that once I'm feeling a little more inspired.
@ted_simp I see you've joined, thanks for the ping group!
@voyd thank you for joining and being an honorary edgy!
I think that's all the announcements for now. This is the last week I'll be doing these in a while though. I'm leaving soon for a long road trip during which I won't have time to post weekly threads, and I won't have reliable Internet to make them on the go. If I'm not back after a month, send someone after me to see if I'm not actually the T.D. Mister Ed we all know and love. Don't send anyone you don't trust though, they might get... converted.
Anyway, see you all next week. Remember: House Edgy is the best house, Christ came to bring a sword, and there is

I found the best website for learning Latin, it's called ecclesia.net.
It's a bit slow to load on mobile, so I've been using it on my computer. I'm going to start with their second course, Latin for Everyone A, which is designed for total beginners. I like how the format is taught; it's like Duolingo. Also it's free, which is a bonus.

Hi I am going to attend mass for the first time in like a year on Sunday. I am hoping to either go into a post-modernist (and therefore irrelevant) protestant-y church or a hardcore rightoid one. The former will be good content for here, the latter will be very good content for here. Recommend a good church for this in southern Cali.

Cope more.

Did you get to the part in the mass where they tell you to eat the body of Christ, and drink his blood? Very cool.

I'm on lesson 3 of 17 in the first course. Each lesson takes about 2 hours to do completely.
I'm trying to get as far as I can before next Sunday's mass.

I see. I guess i just kind of skipped to the part where you eat the actual body, that was like a year ago for me. Are the lessons hard for you? I guess i just memorized everything pretty quickly as a kid.
