Why are they calling it a crisis? People who od on drugs remove themselves from the gene pool, and thats a good thing

Some of these people were tricked into addiction. Pharm reps started coming to fire departments in the early 00s and told them they have to treat pain in the ambulance with opiates even if previously hospitals had recommended not doping the person up before they could examine them.
People were given highly addictive drugs with no consent while being taken to the hospital. Pharmaceutical companies straight up lied and said the stuff isn't addictive.
Zoomers that decide to try fentanyl on purpose are just making bad decisions though.

I don't believe that many people who have oxy addictions developed it from a dose in an ambulance. Addiction is highly context-dependent; there was extensive research done on Vietnam vets on this topic. The ones who got clean before returning home stayed clean. The ones who continued their habit once home were almost impossible to avoid relapse with. (And no, these groups were not self-selecting. The military created a natural experiment by choosing to get some vets clean state-side and some in Vietnam.)
The issue has always been sending people home with abusable supplies, setting expectations of endless prescription renewal, and misleading patients with claims about the drugs being non-habit-forming. Any ambulance ride high would be incidental compared to that.

I wasn't trying to imply that one hit got them addicted. I'm pointing out that the pharm reps were determined to expose as many people to these drugs in as many ways as possible. It's emblematic of the "war on pain" that they sold to the medical professionals and an interesting anecdote i wanted to share.
