Nothing, probably. I've visited São Paulo a couple of times and it is not so different from other Megalopolis (e.g. London). You have the fancy neighborhoods, tall financw buildings, weird ethnic enclaves (although Japanese are much better neighbors than Pakistanis)...

However, I must say that some places in São Paulo look "blighted". Rows of old, wall-to-wall buildings that almost meld together. Can't pinpoint the exact location however - I just saw them from a car in the highway on my way to the airport (Congonhas).

I love São Paulo, beautiful city with lots to do and safer than any other state capital, my only problem with the city is the gigantic urban sprawl, Congonhas is in city itself by the way, you were lucky to take your plane there. Guarulhos airport on the other hand is located in Guarulhos, a satellite city part of the Metropolitan Area which can take hours to reach depending on traffic jams.
