Also, in another missed opportunity for the league of extraordinary gentlemen, Nayland Smith prevented Fu Manchu from assassinating Adolf Hitler before ww2. Can you imagine the fallout from that if Sax Rohmer had followed that plotline into ww2? Nayland Smith is despised and spit upon in the street while Fu Manchu is lionized and invited to all the best society functions happening during the war. Churchill gives him a medal while calling Nayland an “odious little coward”. Of course Fu Manchu is just cultivating connections that will make conquering England easier once the war is over, and both he and Nayland know it. “I tried to prevent this war, but you showed mercy at all the wrong times. Now, thanks to you, parents have to pick their children's bones out of the rubble of their homes. If only you had let me slit that odious little man's throat we could be having this conversation in my torture parlor instead of this hansom cab. Do you remember those days Sir Smith? I would prattle and you would bluster, but we both knew you would escape and inevitably push me into something sharp or tie me to my throne while the building burnt down. Such great games we played! I admit I have never quite escaped the stage magician's life. I need Misdirection and showmanship in my life as much as I need salt and water. I believe this is my greatest sleight of hand yet: the British public thinks I'm the hero and you're the villain. Why? Because you prevented me from cutting off the heads of two foreign governments. Glare at me as you will. I said those two men needed to die to preserve peace in Europe and you thought they deserved to live. We've arrived at the house for the poor. This isn't where you live? You still have that nice little apartment over on Green Street? Of course I know where you lived, and apparently still do despite coming down im the world. Did my men not pick you up their for our occasional midnight chats? Do you remember when I showed you that deathray I used to blow up Chop Chop Sam's dock? You didn't find that funny? You honestly seem to be in a foul mood. You must accept that, in our line of business, one bad gamble spells certain catastrophe and the love of the public is a fleeting thing. Out you go! Goodnight! Sleep well! Try not to let the huns blow you to bits.”
