What is the most impactful event that occurred in the 1990's that changed the shape of the world to get what we have today?

I think it would be the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Nothing beats that because all of a sudden the US became a complete single unipolar powerhouse. All the nation states including India that had closed economies had to shift towards open economies as they realized that system was not working out.

You had McDonalds all the way in Russia. That is how you knew capitalism truly won over communism.

I cannot imagine any other event of the 1990's that shook the world as much as the dissolution of the soviet union.

Today that event still impacts the world as Russia in its present form is too small to fight for itself and thus fell into the sphere of influence of China.

Is there any other major event of the 1990's that had as great an impact?

1. Batman is abelist as shit and does not care about how the Joker's mental illness affects him and literally sends him to arkam assylum, an ABUSIVE INSANE ASSYLUM all the time. Like the treatment there is fricking inhumane and really demonizes mental illness. This point alone makes me sick.

2. The Joker needs someone who can keep up with his theatrics, someone who can stimulate his creativity. Batman never ONCE appreciates or acknowledges the work the Joker puts into their encounters or the dramatic flair behind it. (Yes I know he is killing people but 1. He struggles with a shit ton of untreated mental illness and 2. He just wants to be recognized by someone who gives a single shit about him. Like a crumb of attention or recognition, the man is starved for affection.)

3.What is the appeal??? Batman just beats the shit out of him like the abusive butthole he is.

Wow that was pretty cool, @DeepKeepShill is not big on "le Batman is actually bad?!" stories but it was a good take on it. Everypony was flawed.

@DeepKeepShill say this as a feminist ally: @DeepKeepShill want too impregnate Batgirl

Also generally a technology takes around a century to fully mature.

So we still have yet to see what peak internet looks like.

World wide web

Tech giants like Google and Amazon were founded in the 90s

In some level I think the Japanese economic bubble burst is worth mentioning. Back in the 80s Japan was poised to overcome the US GDP wise and it all ended abruptly by 1995

Fun fact - It took 15 years for Japan to fall from 2nd rank GDP (Nominal) to 3rd place. It looks like it will take another 15 years for it to fall to 4th place by 2025. After that it should take another 15 years for it to fall out of the top 10 economies of the world.

World wide web is cool yes. We are at web 4.0 I think.

Microsoft is currently the only 3 trillion plus net worth company around.

Lots of good points raised by you.

According to projections Germany already surpassed Japan as number 3 last year. Their GDP fall will accelerate along as their population declines

Oh neat. You are right.

So now India is left to over take Japan next year and further the humiliation.

Neat.

How long until Japan's superiority complex collapses under the strain of reality?

Not the most important, but the Columbine shooting definitely had a long term impact on the media, schools, and American culture.

I'd point to the Human Genome Project, even if it didn't technically finish in the 90s. Before then we had no idea what most of our DNA did, solving that revolutionised our understanding of disease and medicine. It's at a similar level to the first antibiotics.

I will take your word for it.

I hope mapping out ones DNA gets even cheaper over time.

Do you know what's the newest disease that's been cured?

I think we are pretty close to curing AIDs right?

Sequencing speed and cost effectiveness has improved exponentially. At the start of the project it'd have taken 100 years for a genome, now it's a day.

For applications I'd break it down by decade:

  • 1990s: identify genes

  • 2000s: map genes to function

  • 2010s: associate mutations with disease

  • 2020s: trial gene therapies

There's already been success with inherited blindness and other diseases. More to come

That's awesome.

2030's have cures and therapies released into the main market

2040's have gene therapy costs go down and become easily accessible

2050's gene therapies available at moderate cost in 3rd world nations.

in geopolitics it was absolutely the dissolution of the soviet union. almost every single modern conflict in the region was caused by the collapse

also the internet was pretty big i think idk

The Ukraine Russia was today is the carry over of the soviet dissolution.

It will likely end with Russia dissolving as well in the end.

The dissolution of Russia would be the final nail in the coffin for the aftermath of the dissolution of the soviet union.
