On September 7th 1822, the Crown Prince Pedro proclaimed Brazil's independence on the shores of the Ipiranga river becoming Emperor Pedro I !historychads
Ladies and gentlemen, dramatards and dramatardettes, please stand up for the National Anthem of the Federative Republic of Brazil!
Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte!
Ó Pátria amada, Idolatrada, Salve! Salve!
Brasil, um sonho intenso, um raio vívido
De amor e de esperança à terra desce,
Se em teu formoso céu, risonho e límpido,
A imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece.
Gigante pela própria natureza,
És belo, és forte, impávido colosso,
E o teu futuro espelha essa grandeza
Terra adorada, Entre outras mil,
És tu, Brasil, Ó Pátria amada!
Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil,
Pátria amada, Brasil!
Deitado eternamente em berço esplêndido,
Ao som do mar e à luz do céu profundo,
Fulguras, ó Brasil, florão da América,
Iluminado ao sol do Novo Mundo!
Do que a terra mais garrida
Teus risonhos, lindos campos têm mais flores;
"Nossos bosques têm mais vida",
"Nossa vida" no teu seio "mais amores".
Ó Pátria amada, Idolatrada, Salve! Salve!
Brasil, de amor eterno seja símbolo
O lábaro que ostentas estrelado,
E diga o verde-louro desta flâmula
Paz no futuro e glória no passado.
Mas, se ergues da justiça a clava forte,
Verás que um filho teu não foge à luta,
Nem teme, quem te adora, a própria morte!
Terra adorada Entre outras mil,
És tu, Brasil, Ó Pátria amada!
Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil,
Pátria amada, Brasil!

Some other heroes of Brazilian Independence:
Tiradentes (the Tooth Puller)
A dentist or something who instigated the first rebelion which kicked the whole thing off. He was captured, executed and his dismembered body was displayed for all to see. Had a horsey face like Adam Driver.
Thomas Cochrane
Scottish Hero of the Napoleonic Wars (where his exploits inspired the fictonal characters of Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubery) he later became an international revolutionary admiral. Had great success in Chile (where the flagship of the Chilean fleet is often named after him) and sought to repeat the effort in Brazil. Here he is standing like a GTA 3 pedestrian:
Samuel Esconder, el Fantasma de Rio
Little is known of Esconder's exploits except that he ate a diet of pure sugar and the Portugese worried that he could not be stopped

Tiradentes was made more famous after the proclamation of the Republic. He was inconsequential to the 1822 events as the Royal Family moving to Brazil in 1808 changed the entire perception of things.
José de Bonifácio would be a much more important figure. !macacos

Tiradentes is cool because his nickname is catchy, no one would care about what a random Joaquim José da Silva Xavier did but the name Tiradentes just rolls off the tongue, perfect street name material

This bit deserves elaboration. Cochrane, in command of the corvette Speedy took on the 3rd rate frigate Gamo by sailing close enough so that the Spanish guns shot over the heads of his crew due to the huge height of it's upper decks. He then had his whole crew push all weighted objects, including all but a few cannons, to the far side of the Speedy so that her firing deck was angled upwards when it fired meaning the British cannonballs smashed through the Spanish ship at a diagonal angle causing massive damage and loss of life. The Spanish then surrendered.
