If anyone's interested in this subject from an earlier perspective, there's a book called 1924: The Year That Made Hitler that's worth reading. It supposes that Hitler consolidated most of his early political power during the year he was in prison for the beer hall putsch. Due to his many sympathizers in the justice system, the police, and the prison guards, he got a slap on the wrist for trying to overthrow the government, then they kind of just let him do whatever the frick he wanted while he was in prison, so in typical Hitler fashion, he wrote lots of angry screeds that resonated with his fans.
