It's not really a matter of “trying” in many cases. The majority of morbidity obese can't maintain weight loss without medical intervention. The statistics are something like 80-90% or something like that because prolonged obesity reduces the ability to loose weight in an effective manner. I went to a seminar for morbidly obese people (like myself) perusing medical weight loss and I was surprised at how low the success rate is for loosing weight though the traditional means
