I don't know if times changed so much but fatties I went to school with were quite keen on PE. They enjoyed bodying you in football or basketball, anything contact was their domain. They probably fared worse in running and volleyball. They were fat because they loved to hoover chips and shit not because they wouldn't like to spend an hour smacking balls around.

Way more people are completely unathletic nowadays, so you have a lot of skinny and skinnyfats with no muscle. Whereas back when, some fatties were actually about as active as other people.
