They're downsizing, and have been for quite some time now, if you're not in fairly directly line to the throne, you're not going to be given a palace of your own, or a manor and patronage of some rural village. They got a free house on the most exclusive property in England, all while being paid a pretty huge sum of money from public money, just to exist there, and had they shut up and done the more or less nothing that was really required of them, they'd have been upgraded into more palatial surroundings when the old lady died.

I'm not surprised they might not have cared much for her, they have this centuries old institution they run, and which for better or for worse (apparently for better it seems, given the reaction the the queen's death) is the seat of power for a bunch of nations, and then this loud, arrogant American foid blasts in and decides she's going to deconstruct the whole thing for her own ego, gets told "no", and has a foid moment, feigns being suicidal and heads back home to finish the job from there.
