I don't mean straight out of college I expect to work 5 something years and at that time also to get good credit to buy some apartments to rent them and in that way having some safe net when going independent.

Gotcha. It's good to spend some years in the industry before striking it out on your own. Also, don't underestimate the work and risks of owning rental units. Managing tenants aside, there's a risk of buying some crappy places that don't rent well. My friend had a couple places he was renting out and one ended up needing $30k+ in repairs. He barely broke even with it, iirc. The real money is in multi-family housing, but you either have to put down a huge downpayment or have good connections to invest with other people.
