Now that it's almost April, I have to try to pretend it's not winter anymore, which means running the smoker when the wind is almost 25mph outside, resulting in completely unpredictable cooking temperatures.
Electric or pellet should be ok. Pellet smokers automate feeding wood into the fire, which makes them very predictable (in a good way) and the temperature control is dead simple. With a regular electric smoker, you need to add water and wood chips to make smoke. You can get good results with an electric smoker, though, they're just kind of fiddly.
My dad has a Traeger combo unit (gas grill + pellet smoker) that's pretty darn nice, but it was also like $600. You might be able to find a cheaper version of the same thing though. One thing I tried in the past that I would not recommend though was using a Weber gas grill and trying to smoke stuff inside it using various online tutorials. It never really worked all that great, the smoke flavor was very underwhelming.
Electric won't be noticeable at all, they do function kind of like an oven, the flame will be very small and self contained. Pellet smoker you can kind of see fire happening, but no more than a typical gas grill, I wouldn't think. If you're living in a condo that you own, nobody's going to be able to tell you not to run one of these things. Just don't run it right next to the wall, it'll peel the paint right off the building.

Alright I need some smoker advice.
My condo doesn't allow charcoal grills, but I want a smoker. Electric/propane smokers seem like they are just ovens. Are pellet smokers what I need?
Also, is there a combo grill/smoker device? I'm thinking about picking up a Weber grill on craigslist but would love a combo unit

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it.
Do the electric or pellet generate a noticable flame, or is it just a smoulder?
Happy Friday!
