he's pro gun as well, has gone on hunting trips with his republican colleagues. apparently he always does a much better job shooting than them because unlike them, his love for guns isn't just for show.

he is overall a decent, down-to-earth guy, and republicans respect that even if they don't agree with his policy

Lied about serving in a combat zone to justify banning guns. Lied about his rank. When his unit got warning they were deploying to Iraq he bailed to run a campaign. He was a senior nco so that's kind of a huge deal. Honestly with that attitude they were probably better off without him.
