China doesn't have a kino division. Most of their movies are shit and poorly acted, both by foreigners and their local actors. It's all about high budget schlop and soulless dreck.

They made some of the best movies of all time around the 1980s-1990s. Both in Hong Kong and depressing artsy stuff by Zhang Yimou. But there was a decision made by the party leadership at some point that they didn't want any movies that are thought-provoking because they don't want their people to have too much to think. The last really good one I know of is A World Without Thieves from 2004. Which really pisses me off because about 1/3 of the movies I watched were Chinese before all the life got strangled out of them.

For a while they had some really good movies from the mainland like The Story of Qiu Ju that didn't pull many punches about how fricked-up daily life and the government is. But that was from the generation that survived the Cultural Revolution and crushed it.
