They're topical, inherently dramatic, the story is essentially written for you. All they have to do is get a half-decent cast and not frick up the screenplay.
And general audiences, who are largely poor, LOVE watching rich scumbags get their comeuppance (whether they still remain rich after is irrelevant, like that WeWork guy).
It just makes for good entertainment.
